Plano International Festival

Reading Around the World

The 7th annual Plano International Festival offered laughter, learning, ethnic cuisine, dancers and artists from various parts of the world. I rapped and read excerpts from my book, Getting Back in the Game!, as part of the festival’s Reading Around the World program. Kids really enjoyed the Healthy Choices rap song; even learning and singing the chorus lines. They also earned Its All About Choice glow-in-the-dark wristbands when they correctly answered questions about the story’s characters. Three other Dallas area authors also participated.

Ill be appearing at Huffman Elementary, Oct 13, for their Literacy Night. Check my site for details about setting up an appearance at your school or organization.

Kid’s Reviews by Lyda Whiting

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHOICE: GETTING BACK IN THE GAME!

Danny loved to play basketball, and he had been on the team at his old school. But a few months spent watching TV and eating too many sweets had affected his body, his game — and his confidence.  He wanted to play ball with the kids at his new school. But one of the boys teased Danny about his weight and refused to let him play. Danny felt miserable. He wanted to get back into shape and play basketball again, but he wasn’t sure how to start.
And then he meet the Cardio Kid and his Fat Fighting Force. They helped him learn about healthy food choices, and exercises to help Danny build muscle and burn fat. Danny liked what they told him. But before the day was out, he met up with the Blubba Hill Gang. The gang tempted Danny to hang out with them and eat junk food and watch TV. Danny had to make some tough choices if he wanted to get back in the game.

This book uses fanciful cartoon characters — the Cardio Kid is actually a muscular heart with arms, legs and a single strand of hair — as a way of introducing ideas about fitness and healthy eating. This entertaining story will encourage children to make healthier choices so they can get in the game too. For ages 7 and up.

Published by IAAC Media, this book is available at your local bookstore.

Orlando Brown Dead: Former NFL Offensive Lineman Dies At 40

Gone at 40....

I realize these are grown men and are accountable for the food and activity choices they make post retirement…Having said that, I think the NFLP Union could do more to educate these men and better monitor their health status with biannual physicals. Maybe they’re already doing these things and the players are failing to comply…I don’t know. But what I do know is that ex-NFL’ers, especially the bigger players have a much shorter life expectancy than the average male. And that is sad….

Changing Lives…One Basket at a Time

I was  moved by this story…So moved that I put off my shopping tips segment to interview the spokesman for Rwanda Partners, who  happened to be setup in Costco. When you think about the  horrific experiences these women have endured, one must admire and be inspired by their resilience and determination. It’s a life lesson our young people need to hear. Watch this short, but insightful  video at: http://youtu.be/tHpUBgqZ80M. Then share your sage thoughts in the comments box.

For more info go to their site: http://www.rwandabaskets.com/…And if you can pitch-in, buy one of these beautifully handcrafted baskets. Protect your health! –HDT

New Book Tackles Childhood Obesity

Written By: Herb D Trainer - Sep• 16•11

It’s All About Choice (IAAC): Getting Back In The Game! has colorful fictional characters that deliver timely, healthy choice messages. The story centers around the struggles of an overweight boy, who’s and bullied by other kids when he returns to the basketball court—in a new neighborhood—after a year of avoiding the sport he loves. (You’ll have to read the book to discover why he avoids the court.)  And how, through hard work and discipline, he loses weight and gets back in the game. The book’s health and fitness lessons and training are expressed in the form of two cool, positive rap songs/rhymes. The first one, Healthy Choices, is free to download at www.CardioKidd.com
